What Is Community Solar?

In general Community Solar (also known as shared solar) is a solar energy installation that is shared by multiple households, businesses or individuals. It is an alternative to installing solar panels on individual homes or businesses, which may not be suitable for some people due to various reasons such as available space or finances.

With Community Solar, residents and businesses can purchase a portion of the power produced by a larger, off-site solar array, which is connected to the electric grid. This allows people who do not have access to their own solar panels or cannot afford the installation costs to still benefit from clean and renewable energy.

The shared solar installation is usually located in a central area that can benefit a nearby community, or it may be distributed across a region to increase its coverage area. Participants in a community solar program typically receive credits on their electric bill for the energy generated by their portion of the solar installation, which can help offset their electricity costs.

Community solar promotes renewable energy adoption and community engagement around sustainability, which benefits the environment and the local community. Additionally, it can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution while providing economic benefits to the region.
